Machine Vision - FAQ - Lens / Illuminator

What lens / illuminator should I be using?

This is a very important question and frequently the answer to this question translates directly into project success or failure. No matter what camera brand or type is used, poor image quality is costly in terms of extra R&D time and money. In short, image quality has a high potential to kill an otherwise viable project. It is true that images can be repaired and enhanced by software or other means, but it is also true that high quality images may contain details not present in enhanced or repaired images. Simply put, if the human eye can't see it, why should software see it? It should be noted here that only a few exceptions contradict that rule. Users should always thrive to capture the best possible image quality.

Axtel cameras have a built in illuminator and there are provisions for adding a polarization filter. For basic applications this is sufficient, but frequently users encounter more complex situations. We think that our customers deserve the best possible advice, that is why we recommend visiting a leading authority for lenses and illumination related issues.
